“What can we do to work God’s work, To prosper and increase the brotherhood of all mankind . . . ?” as the popular hymn goes (CS Hymnal, No. 82:2). How about praying, learning, networking, and “daily deeds!” In this part of our website, we hope to share ways to lend a “helping hand,” meeting simple needs. If you volunteered to help others in your church community, what would you need - a little training, mentoring, knowing what to do, or whom to contact, or some particular skills? Summary
This workshop highlights the activities of “Christian caring” among church members, family, and friends and “Christian Science nursing,” in our movement and how they relate to each other – their similarities and uniquenesses. Jesus’ parables of the “Sheep and the Goats” and the “Good Samaritan,” indicate that our natural desire to love and care for one another is a necessary expression of God’s love and care for His creation and the coincidence of the divine with the human. It is a natural part of the Christian’s way of life. Therefore, it is an essential element of the practice of Christian Science.
The presentation includes many excerpts from articles published in the Christian Science periodicals relating to “Christian caring” and “Christian Science nursing.” These articles were written by church members, practitioners, teachers, the Christian Science Board of Directors (in 1988), and a past Manager of the Christian Science Nursing Activities Department of The Mother Church. The workshop concludes with the question, “What might ‘Christian caring’ look like (in thought and deed) in our church communities?” And, followed by a sharing of ideas from the participants.
